{"id":521,"date":"2016-12-20T10:00:24","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T14:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/?p=521"},"modified":"2016-12-23T07:01:12","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T11:01:12","slug":"snow-in-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/2016\/12\/20\/snow-in-hawaii\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow in Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes we have had snow in Hawaii. \u00a0The island of Hawaii, often referred to as the Big Island has two mountain (volcanoes) that are nearly 14,000 feet tall and it is cold enough most of the year to get snow.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-537\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-537 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/IMG_0628-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"img_0628\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/IMG_0628-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/IMG_0628-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.searsie.com\/sabbatical\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/IMG_0628-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow covered Mauna Kea as seen from Honomu, HI, near Akaka Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There was quite a bad storm, that dump a lot of rain where we were, about 8 inches in 36 hours. \u00a0Some places near us got 20+ inches of rain. \u00a0What that translated was 20-30 inches of snow on the top of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.<\/p>\n<p>Mauna Kea is most known for the number of observatories on top it. \u00a0There is a road that goes all the way to the top. \u00a0It is a spectacular place to view the sunset and to look up at the stars. \u00a0There is 40% less atmosphere to block out the light of the stars. \u00a0It is a spectacular sight. Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano, and has not erupting in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Mauna Loa is still an active volcano. It was threatening to destroy Hilo back in the 1980s. \u00a0Mauna Loa can be driven to the top with a 4&#215;4. \u00a0Only the locals dive up. \u00a0At about 11,000 feet there is NOAA weather station that has been contributing the longest running climate change experiment.<\/p>\n<p>Both mountains are very important to the native Hawaiians and their culture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes we have had snow in Hawaii. \u00a0The island of Hawaii, often referred to as the Big Island has two mountain (volcanoes) that are nearly 14,000 feet tall and it is cold enough most of the year to get snow.
